Resources for Applied Sociology

The NCSA Committee for Applied, Clinical, and Other Public Sociology is committed to all those who practice sociology outside of traditional academic appointments. To express our commitment to this ideal, and the open sharing of resources, the committee is pleased to post related materials that our membership and other sociologists can access free of charge.

To submit materials for review OR becoming involved with the committee’s work, please contact

NCSA Applied Sociology Video Series

What Can I Do with a Degree in Sociology? Advice & Experiences of Graduates

The videos below were created during the 2022 meetings of the North Central Sociological Association in Indianapolis. The shorter videos highlight recent sociology graduates providing advice to current students about finding a job using their sociological knowledge and skills. The longer videos give three of these graduates time to describe their jobs and how they use sociology in greater detail. If you are a student, we hope that these videos are useful as you think about your sociology classes and how they can help you in the future. If you are a faculty member or mentor to students, we hope that they can assist you in in working with students who are interested in finding ways of using sociology in their post-baccalaureate lives.

Online Resources

Sociology at Work  provides articles, videos, podcasts, graphics and other resources to promote the excellence of applied sociologists and to support the career planning of sociology students.  The site was created as a network to help practitioners who work beyond academia. Make sure to write comments and questions, and connect with us on social media to stay up to date with applied sociology news from around the world.  The ‘resources’ page has many items for use in classrooms and for students exploring non-academic careers.

Making Sociology Matter  is a site where students, colleagues, and members of the public can share, highlight and celebrate the wonderful things that are happening. Burce Ravelli wants to not only inspire students through my passion for sociology but also by showing them examples of sociology in action. We need to go beyond “talking the talk” and show everyone we also “walk the walk”.

Drs. Daniela Jauk-Ajamie (The University of Akron) and Angela Adkins (Stark State College) have developed a podcast to make sociology recognizable and to educate students about actual careers people pursue with Sociology degrees. The first season was published in Summer 2022. There are seven interviews, averaging 20 minutes each, with Sociology graduates in applied and intriguing career fields.

For the Why Sociology? podcase website, click HEREDownload an overview of season 1 episodes.

The podcast is available on all major podcast apps and should so be a new and accessible learning tool to students on apps/media they already use.

Jauk-Ajamie and Adkins have also developed an assignment using the podcast for Sociology classrooms. The assignment has now been published on TRAILS, the national teaching repository of the American Sociological Association.  Click HERE to go directly to the assignment in TRAILS.
