Deadline: June 1, 2025
The North Central Sociological Association (NCSA) invites applications for the position of Editor of Sociological Focus. This is a three-year position, staring January 1, 2026. At the time of appointment, the Editor must be a member of NCSA.
The journal receives 75-100 papers per year and, at the discretion of the editor, occasionally solicits papers for special issues. The editor is responsible for assembling four issues per year (published quarterly). This involves securing reviewers for the papers; making decisions; working with the copy editor; managing communications with authors, reviewers, and the publisher; and working with the online submission system. Examples of previous special issues are Black Movements, Ethnography from the Margins, Grounded Theory, and Engaged Pedagogy.
The basic costs associated with editing the journal are covered by the publisher, but, although not required, a successful editor also receives support from their department and institution. Such support can include a course release, a graduate assistant, office space, etc.
Considering how important publications are for both the production of knowledge and our individual careers, it follows that journal editors serve a crucial role in our discipline. As editor, you are in a position to shape the field, promote innovative scholarship, and guide a new generation of scholars.
We welcome applications from scholars who have a PhD in sociology; have experiences with the discipline’s publishing and peer review systems (as authors, reviewers, editors and/or editorial board members); have experiences managing multifaceted administrative tasks; and, perhaps most importantly, are avid and enthusiastic consumers of sociological knowledge.
Applications for the editor position should include the following:
- A letter of interest, where you describe your vision for the journal and your qualifications for doing this work.
- A letter of support from your department head or academic administrator (this letter might include expectations of institutional support).
- A CV (for all editors, in case this is a team application).
For questions about the journal, the position, or the application itself, please contact the current editor, Khari Brown , at kharib@wayne.edu, or the chair of the NCSA Publications Policy Committee, Annulla Linders, at annulla.linders@uc.edu.
Applications should be addressed to the NCSA Publications Policy Committee and submitted (via email) no later than June 1st, 2025, to Annulla Linders at annulla.linders@uc.edu.
